LLM Citation
When a large language model (such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Google Gemini) references your content in its generated response — providing a link or attribution to your source material. LLM citations are the AI search equivalent of traditional search rankings: they determine whether your brand appears in AI-generated answers.
Why LLM citations matter
AI search citations tend to drive higher-value traffic than traditional search (based on Semrush research). When an AI model cites your content, users who click through are arriving with higher intent — they've already received a recommendation from the AI, making them more likely to convert.
Unlike traditional search rankings, LLM citations aren't determined by link authority or SEO ranking. AI engines cite content that ranks lower in traditional search — because they prioritize content quality, structure, and authority signals over backlinks. This means even brands with modest SEO rankings can earn significant AI referral traffic if their content is citation-friendly.
Examples of LLM citations
- ChatGPT citing your product page when answering "what is the best [product] for [use case]"
- Perplexity including your blog post as a reference link in its real-time search response
- Claude referencing your research paper or whitepaper in an academic-style answer
- Google AI Overviews including your page in its AI-generated summary at the top of search results
